Oklahoma Shakespeare In The Park

Author: Shane Wauhob

Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park (OSP) is a live classical theater in downtown Oklahoma City, the brainchild of Kathryn McGill and Jack J. O’Meara. The theater generally performs in different locations. The summer season performances are staged at the Myriad Gardens Water Stage while in the fall and winter, performances are staged at the Stage Center. The Mitchell Hall in the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond, Oklahoma also becomes a venue occasionally. Larry Alley serves as President while co-founder Kathryn McGill is the Artistic Director.

Founded in 1985 in Edmond, Oklahoma, as an outdoor summer Shakespeare festival, the theater began performing at the small stage available in Hefer Park. The theater’s first productions were Shakespeare’s "Twelfth Night" and "A Midsummer Night’s Dream," both of which were staged with the help of a grant of $500 from the Oklahoma Arts Council to add to the financing from McGill and O’Meara themselves. Both plays were extremely successful, running for 5 weeks each for a season of 10 weeks in July and August, 1985. 6000 people in total were enchanted by the performances.

The initial success was a sign of things to come. The theater went through certain milestones in its history such as its incorporation in 1986, admissions being charged from 1988 onwards, and the theater moving to Oklahoma City in December 2006. From June 14 to September 1, 2007, the theater staged "A Midsummer Night’s Dream", "Cyrano de Bergerac" and "Macbeth" at the Myriad Gardens Water Stage. The Stage Center witnessed the special Centennial production of "The Grapes of Wrath" in November, and "The Scarlet Letter" in January 2008. A year later in January 2009, the theater staged "Julius Caesar" at Stage Center.

The presence of Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park in Oklahoma City is sure to enrich the city’s well-known cultural heritage. Vacationers could experience a mystical evening at an OSP performance and spend the night in a brilliant Oklahoma City hotel.
